Dogsled teams have been used as a traditional
form of transportation, for many centuries by aboriginal
hunters and travelers across the great northern region.
The early RCMP of the Northwest Territories made dogsledding
famous with their legendary dog patrols.
With the introduction of modern technology,
dog teams were replaced in the mid 20th century by the
motorized snowmobile. In recent days, the dog team has
once again become popular as a sport and dog team races
are held both locally internationally.
This exhilarating
dogsled ride provides a uniquely northern experience
and exciting memories! You will visit the sled-dog kennels,
where you will meet the friendly champion racing
dogs as they are being harnessed. This is a perfect
photo opportunity, especially if there are puppies at
the kennels. After getting comfortable in the sled,
known as the komatik by Inuit people, you
will be whisked away by dog team for a trail ride through
northern winter. The trail ride is approximately 8 km
long (20 minutes) and is across frozen lakes. Sit back,
relax and enjoy the ride! Coffee/tea/hot chocolate and
cookies are served at the kennels.
